As its name suggests, meals ready to eat (MREs) are foods that are available for consumption. Big deal, you say, like pizza or other takeaway is a "meal ready to eat." However, these are for packaged foods have a long life. They are also designed to require very little preparation work. Therefore, these foods are ideal for emergency preparedness and survival such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural disasters. These rations will be able to hold individuals for a period of time until help arrives long-term relief.

The Meals term "ready to eat" certainly seems general enough and only implies that the food has been prepared. However, as already discussed, there a period of longevity associated with MRE. The term food ready to eat actually coined by the U.S. military to provide its men and women adequate nutrition during combat or field work. Therefore, MRE packaged for the U.S. government maintain strict requirements. Each package consists provide about 1200 calories and weigh between 380 to 510 grams. Each package can also survive parachute drops and extreme temperature fluctuations. That's what food means to "military ready to eat".

Obviously, for civilian purposes, does not need these strict requirements on their products prepacked food. However, you can get the rations from the same suppliers that the U.S. government, but for civil purposes. The packaging is different but in essence, the same food is meant for emergency survival.

The acquisition of canned foods, canned foods and bottled water is never a bad idea. We have seen the devastation that Mother Nature can unleash and you always want to be prepared for natural disasters. Survival of food is also useful for weekend getaways spontaneous camping trips too. Just remember to remove the food before the end and replaced with new packages.
